However, it had been reported that the Capital One Cup holders had stolen the march on West Brom in the race to sign the 19-year-old, who is currently on loan at the Hawthorns from Chelsea.
But Clarke has rubbished rumours that Lukaku could be attracted to the prospect of playing in the Europa League with Swansea, and does not believe he will move to the Liberty Stadium.
“It is idle gossip – it’s lazy,” Clarke told reporters.
“I read in the press he’s going to Swansea – but I would be very surprised if he ends up there.”
The Scottish boss admits there has been interest in his players, who have thrived this year and look set to finish in the top half of the table, but West Brom are determined to keep hold of their star players.
“We’re not concerned about losing players,” Clarke continued.
“It’s a compliment. It means we’ve had a good season. But if anyone comes for our players they will have to pay a lot of money.”
