The former Swindon Town manager was spotted at the Madejski Stadium during the Royals' 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, but has denied the visit was linked to the managerial post

Paolo Di Canio has denied that his visit to the Madejski Stadium this weekend was related to any talks over the vacant managerial role at Reading.

Di Canio was seen in the director's box during the Royals' 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, Brian McDermott's last game in charge before being sacked on Tuesday.

The former West Ham striker insisted he has not been contacted by anyone at the club, although admitted his desire to manage in the English top flight eventually.

"It was just a coincidence. I was there only to watch the game," Di Canio told BBC Sport.

"I was sat with Stuart Pearce at Reading and we had some discussions about the game.

"I want to watch games at the top level and [the Madejski Stadium] was full of passion, so it was good to go there.

"Next time it could be Swansea or Southampton or Tottenham, I don't know, but this is what I am going to do for the next few weeks.

"It is my ambition to manage at the top level."
