The 22-year-old shot stopper joins the Latics until the end of the season after impressing Roberto Martinez during a two-week trial, describing the deal as a "dream move"Wigan have confirmed the signing of Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Joel Robles on a six-month loan deal.
The Spanish shot stopper had previously been on a two-week trial with the Latics, impressing enough to earn a move to the DW Stadium, where he is now eligible to play in Saturday’s clash against Sunderland.
And manager Roberto Martinez has hailed the 22-year-old’s talent, expressing his belief that Robles can add competition for places to the Wigan squad.
“Joel is a great talent and is in an exciting moment of his personal career,” Martinez told reporters.
“His experiences at Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano will help him to bring real competition to the goalkeeping department at the club and we hope this can be a productive period for both him and us. We are delighted to have him on board.”
Last season, Robles impressed during 13 appearances on loan at Rayo Vallecano, while he also made two for his parent club in the same season.
Upon joining Wigan, the shot stopper revealed his delight at moving to the Premier League, something he describes as a dream.
“I am so happy to be able to start my career in England,” Robles said. “The Premier League is a dream for any player in the world and when you see other players from Spain and what they have done in England, it gives us hope that we can be successful here.
“Everyone has welcomed me to the club and now I just have to do my best and compete for my place.”
