Newcastle boss Pardew warns players that they are not too good for relegation

The Magpies have suffered a torrid first half of the season culminating in a third round FA Cup upset against Brighton and the loss of star striker Demba Ba to Chelsea for £7m
Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has warned his side that they are not safe from relegation from the Premier League following their 2-0 FA Cup elimination by Brighton.

The Magpies fielded an inexperienced side in the third round and were humiliated as goals from Andrea Orlandi and Will Hoskins took the Championship side through.

Skipper for the day Shola Ameobi saw red whilst an already depleted squad was weakened by the sale of striker Demba Ba to Chelsea for £7 million on the eve of the match, and Pardew bemoaned the lack of quality at his disposal for the tie.

“We just didn’t have enough quality on the pitch for a Newcastle team,” Pardew told reporters.

6/1 Newcastle are 6/1 with William Hill to be relegated
“We need our best players out there and quickly because we need to preserve our Premier League status. We are in danger. That was a shadow of our best team today.

“We need to get more big-game players who can handle the responsibility of wearing the Newcastle jersey.

“I never thought we would be in the position we were in today and we have to hold our hands up and say we should have bought more players.

“We’ve been terribly unlucky, but we should have brought in one or two more players to give us cover.

“We’re paying the price now, but the window is open and it gives us an opportunity to strengthen."

Last season’s LMA Manager of the Year stressed the importance of dipping into the transfer market to improve his team and pull themselves away from trouble. France international Mathieu Debuchy has already been added to the ranks at St James' Park.

“It is important to spend during this month. It’s difficult to get transfers in this window but we’ll have to do everything possible," said Pardew.

“We’re not too big to go down and we’ve got to fight in every game now to get all the points we can.”
