England manager Fabio Capello has demanded that the Capello Index be removed from the internet after insisting he had not approved the controversial rankings of his players to be published.

The index first appeared on Saturday morning, opening with a statement on the website explaining why the World Cup results had been released: "We are finally able to satisfy the numerous request we have had by publishing the results of the evaluation of the players’ performance during the South African World Cup.

"As you may well know, out of respect to the Football Association, who asked us to suspend the real-time publication, we decided to wait until the end of the tournament."

In a statement released to Press Association Sport, Capello said: "I did not authorise this and am angry that the index was published."

A statement released by the FA Saturday morning said: "A spokesman from the FA said that the index ratings had not been seen or approved by Mr Capello, were published without his knowledge and that his representatives have taken immediate steps to have the material taken down.”

The index made grim reading for the England players after their last-16 elimination by old rivals Germany.

Tottenham forward Jermain Defoe emerged with the highest average mark at 62.47, but only featured in two games.

West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green got the lowest mark for the tournament with a score of 51.67, his only game coming against the USA which saw him fumble Clint Dempsey’s shot and gift the Americans an equaliser.

Capello came to the same conclusion as FIFA and deemed Uruguay striker Diego Forlan as the player of the tournament - the Atletico Madrid strikers overall score was 65.77.

German pair Miroslav Klose and Golden Boot winner Thomas Muller finished second and third.

Eventual winners Spain took the next three spots with Andres Iniesta placed fourth, Xavi fifth and David Villa in sixth.

The top 10 was completed by Uruguay's Luis Suarez, the Netherland's Arjen Robben and Germany duo Bastian Schweinsteiger and Manuel Neuer.

Saturday's events bring into question the future of the controversial website.

Capello initially planned to issue rankings for all World Cup games within two hours of the final whistle, but was eventually persuaded to shelve the idea by the FA.

A four week trial of the index was implemented towards the end of last season between players of Premier League clubs Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester City and Liverpool.

The index rated Ledley King, Michael Dawson and Sol Campbell as the best English central defenders, ahead of John Terry and England captain Rio Ferdinand.

The findings made interesting reading as Dawson was only called up to the England squad after Rio Ferdinand pulled out due to injury and did not feature after Ledly King’s tournament was ended early.

Arsenal’s Sol Campbell did not even feature in the squad.

Further index rankings saw Paul Scholes ranked the best English midfielder, followed by Frank Lampard and Joe Cole.

After talk to try and get Paul Scholes to return to the England set up failed, Capello’s reluctance to use former Chelsea man Joe Cole became a huge talking point.

This season the Capello Index was due to provide rankings on all Premier League, Primera Division, Serie A and Champions League matches, promising to publish all data no more then two hours after the end of games.

The website uses a statistical system devised by Capello to analyse each player's performance and award a final score out of 100, rather than requiring the Italian to make a judgment call on each match.
