Chief correspondent Wayne Veysey wins Goal.com UK World Cup Predictions League

FIFA World Cup Trophy in South Africa
The 2010 World Cup is now over, and while Spain took the glory on the field, our chief correspondent Wayne Veysey earned the bragging rights off it by topping the Goal.com UK Predictions League.

To mark the 19th incarnation of the showpiece global event, Goal.com UK and its team of writers were all looking to get involved.

As well as bringing you comprehensive LIVE! coverage of the tournament, the Goal.com UK team pitted their wits against each other by predicting the outcome of each and every game taking place in South Africa.

Three points were awarded for predicting the exact score, one point for the right result, and nothing for anything else.

After 64 gruelling games, nobody could claim to be our answer to Paul the Octopus, but Wayne Veysey emerged as champion, rounding off a fine tournament by correctly predicting that Spain would defeat the Netherlands in the final in Johannesburg.

A victorious Wayne said: "It may not be remembered as the most aesthetically pleasing World Cup finals - and some of the football really was hit and miss - but never mind the quality, feel the drama.

"There were plenty of upsets early on which turned the formbook on its head - Spain losing to Switzerland, England scoring a decent goal - and made mugs of all us. But the established order eventually prevailed, as it always does in the World Cup, and those who had backed Spain at the start, and even going back two years, can, like me, feel ever so slightly pleased with themselves. Now to fill the World Cup void."

The final standings are listed below, giving you the chance to praise the clairvoyants among us, sympathise with those who were only a result or two out, or just simply laugh at those rooted to the bottom of the table!

And don't forget, Wayne Veysey will answer your top transfer question on Twitter on Monday July 12 at 2pm GMT. Get the lowdown on what your club will be up to with transfer season now in full swing.
