Marcel Desailly calls for Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra to be suspended by France after World Cup 2010 shambles
Skipper needs to 'pay the price'
By Zack Wilson
Evra was made skipper for the tournament, and ended up leading a players' strike from training at one stage as the squad imploded in a mess of dissent and argument, prompting accusations from French politicians that the team had let the whole country down.
Fingers of blame have since been pointed at coach Raymond Domenech, but Desailly, who won 116 caps for his country and was a World Cup winner in 1998, feels that Evra has his share of responsibility to bear.
"The Federation president and the coach have already paid the price," the former defender told French newspaper Metro.
"And I think that Evra, who is the origin of the strike, should pay too.
"The captain made a mistake and he has to assume the consequences of his actions.
"He decided not to train, before realising his mistake and apologising. But he deserves at least a temporary suspension.
"He is an excellent player, our best left-back, but he should be suspended for two months, because the captain is the first one to be an example.
"His behaviour affected the image of France throughout the world."
