The inspirational Fenerbahce centre back has been unable to shake off the knee injury he picked up in the quarter-final victory against Ghana. Head coach Oscar Tabarez has drafted in Barcelona defender Martin Caceres and returnee Diego Godin to give his defence a new look.
Elsewhere, controversial striker Luis Suarez and Porto full back sit out the match through suspension. Diego Forlan and Edinson Cavani have formed a strike partnership up front in the absence of the Ajax player.
Netherlands head coach Bert van Marwijk has been able to welcome back Hamburg stopper Joris Mathijsen after he pulled out of the previous match with a knock to his knee. Demy de Zeeuw and Khalid Boulahrouz have been brought in to replace suspended duo Nigel de Jong and Gregory van der Wiel.
