Wayne Rooney has insisted he was fully fit at World Cup 2010 and the reason for England's failure was that they simply failed to click.

The Manchester United striker remains angry at reports suggesting he was carrying an injury throughout the tournament in South Africa, after it was revealed he only missed one training session due to tightness in his calf muscles.

However, despite registering 26 goals in 32 Premier League starts last season for the Red Devils the Three Lions striker failed to find the back of the net at the World Cup.

"Wayne [Rooney] was perfectly fit. In fact, he said it was the fittest he'd been in six months," a source close to the striker revealed to The People.

"He just felt England never managed to fire."

Following his lacklustre performances, Rooney has faced stinging criticism for failing to live up to expectations, but still refuses to use tiredness or injury as an excuse.

The source added: "If he was so unfit or struggling there's no way he could have made the runs he did against Germany.

"His fitness is a red herring and Wayne simply believes it just didnt happen for England. And as far as he is concerned the conspiracy theories about splits, divisions and bust-ups are just rubbish."

Alex Fisher reports from the Reebok Stadium: “It's been a lively start here at the Reebok (I told you it would be!) with both teams looking confident going forward but they have both lacked that little bit of quality in front of goal. Wigan's passing and movement has been much better than their hosts but David Wheater has had the game’s best chance, heading a Martin Petrov corner over the bar. Roberto Martinez has ordered his side to play in a 3-4-2-1 formation which reverts to a 5-4-1 in defensive situations!”

Arthur on Twitter: “Why, oh why, does Boas continue to play Bosingwa? He does literally NOTHING every game. Detrimental to the squad and the spirit.”

Wayne Veysey reports from Craven Cottage: “Formation-wise, both teams have pulled a few rabbits from the hat. Somewhat surprisingly, Moussa Dembele lines up alongside Danny Murphy in central midfield, with Damien Duff, Brian Ruiz and Clint Dempsey the three attacking midfielders supporting Pavel Pogrebnyak. For Stoke,  Marc Wilson and Andy Wilkinson have swapped their usual full-back roles, possibly because Duff and Dempsey both like to cut inside.”

Rob Stewart reports from the Stadium of Light: “Good turn-out here on Wearside from Arsenal fans with around 4,000 Gooners in the South Stand, presumably here to pay homage to Thierry Henry on what could be his last Premier League game if he gets off the substitutes' bench.”
