World Cup 2010: Uruguayan linesman refuses to apologise to England for Frank Lampard mistake
FIFA regulations prevent Mauricio Espinosa from commenting...
By Matt Monaghan
Mauricio Espinosa was the man at the centre of the controversy after the Chelsea midfielder's lob was incorrectly ruled to have not gone over the line yesterday. The strike would have levelled the score at 2-2 and could have prevented England's humiliating 4-1 loss.
Approached by the London Evening Standard to speak about the incident, Espinosa first stated: “Okay, but I cannot talk about the game.”
When asked to apologise for his mistake, he then said: “No. FIFA does not allow me to talk about the game. It is the rules.”
At half-time during the match, the 38-year old teacher was approached by a frustated David Beckham to explain his call. He was then seen to mutter "Oh my God" after seeing a replay of Lampard's shot.
