Miroslav Klose missed Die Mannschaft's last group game against Ghana due to suspension but was drafted into the starting lineup against the Three Lions.
The Bayern Munich striker duly netted his side's first goal of the afternoon after just 20 minutes and also had a number of other chances.
After the match, Klose expressed his delight at having defeated Germany's traditional rivals and also remarked that his side now aim to reach the semi-finals.
Klose is quoted by AP as saying: "We were aggressive from the first minute and it was a deserved victory.
"Our target was to reach the semifinals and that's what we want to achieve."
