World Cup 2010: England manager Fabio Capello confident Wayne Rooney will be fit for clash with Germany
Fans forget Algeria outburst after fine performance
By Harry Veal
Manchester United’s Rooney was replaced by Joe Cole in the 72nd minute, but Capello is confident that his star striker will be fit to face Germany in Bloemfontein.
"I took Wayne off because his ankle wasn't feeling too good. I don't know exactly what he's got but I'm not concerned. I think he'll be okay for our next game on Sunday,” Capello told reporters.
Along with most of the players in Capello’s squad, Rooney failed to impress in the opening two group games against the USA and Algeria, but the Manchester United striker put in a much improved performance against Slovenia.
As England dominated possession, their confidence grew and Rooney seemed to re-discover some of the swagger he displayed throughout the domestic season and the crowd seemed to forgive his criticism of their support during the game against Algeria.
With Germany now between them and a place in the quarter-finals, England fans will be hoping that Capello’s confidence over Rooney’s fitness is well placed and he can lead the side to a famous victory.
