Widely regarded as the greatest American ever to have played football, Donovan was a colossus for his side once again today. The USA spent most of the match trying to break down Algeria in search of the goal they needed to secure a spot in the second round.
As usual, the USA always looked most likely when Donovan was at the centre of their attacking play. One terrific pass in the first half so nearly released Michael Bradley for the opening goal, and it was also his clever chip that led to a golden opportunity for Jozy Altidore.
And in their hour of need, it was Donovan who stepped up and grabbed the goal to rescue his side in injury-time. Not only did he lead the break in the build-up to the goal, but showed the desire to continue his surge forward and follow up Clint Dempsey’s effort to slot home from close range.
