Whether it’s 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, everybody has an opinion on what system the Italian should play, but as a number of players are still yet to play in South Africa - or have played only a small part so far - we wanted to know your views.
There was speculation that Joe Cole may not even make it to the World Cup, but after getting the nod to go to South Africa ahead of the likes of Adam Johnson, he is still yet to feature. However, 68.2 per cent of readers believe the free agent is England’s best option to have coming off the bench and making an impact at this summer’s tournament.
Jermain Defoe started last season at Tottenham Hotspur in terrific form, but had a poor end to the campaign, despite helping his side qualify for the Champions League. He was being talked about as a possible starter alongside Wayne Rooney last week and 13.15 per cent of you think he is the man to spark a game into life.
Defoe’s Spurs teammate Peter Crouch was expected to be the man to start up front before the World Cup and, after being handed the number nine shirt, speculation grew that he could join Rooney in attack, but he has to settle for two late substitute appearance so far in South Africa and 10.09 per cent of readers believe he should remain as England’s ‘plan B’.
Gareth Barry’s return from injury means Michael Carrick is unlikely to start unless another player picks up an injury and 8.26 per cent believe the Manchester United midfielder can make the biggest impact of the England substitutes by coming on off the bench.
After a selection dilemma against the USA, Fabio Capello preferred James Milner to start on the left wing to allow Steven Gerrard to take the place of the injured Barry in the centre of midfield. However, the Aston Villa star was taken off after just 30 minutes after picking up a booking early on in the game and only 0.31 per cent of readers back him to come on off the bench and rescue England’s World Cup dream.
