Debate: Joe Cole, Crouch or Defoe - who can come off the bench and rescue England's World Cup dream?

The Three Lions need a saviour...

By James Daly

While England's World Cup dream is fast turning into a nightmare there are still a handful of players yet to be properly introduced to the action by Fabio Capello.

Goal.com UK looks at the men who could make an impact and swing the fortunes back in the Three Lions' favour in the do-or-die match with Slovenia on Wednesday. Consider the options, then vote in our poll below.

MIDFIELDERS

Michael Carrick | Manchester United

Caps:
22

Goals:
0

Castrol Ranking:
134

Pros:
Used to the pressures of playing with Manchester United. Possesses good passing range.

Cons:
Has found himself way down the midfield pecking order for club and country lately.

Joe Cole
| Chelsea
Caps: 54

Goals:
10

Castrol Ranking:
832

Pros:
Looked like he could be one of the stars of this World Cup with some sparkling displays in warm-up games. Can turn a game in a second.

Cons:
Comes into the tournament off the back of a serious knee injury and lack of playing time at Chelsea.

James Milner | Aston Villa
Caps: 9

Goals:
0

Castrol Ranking:
155

Pros:
Went to South Africa as one of the Premier League's in-form players, having starred for Aston Villa and picked up the PFA Young Player of the Year Award.

Cons:
Still a relative novice at international level and struggled when handed a start against the USA in the opening game.

FORWARDS

Peter Crouch
| Tottenham
Caps: 40

Goals:
21

Castrol Ranking:
471

Pros:
Has an enviable scoring record for England and other countries are not quite sure what to make of the gangly 6ft 7in striker.

Cons:
Underwhelmed in Germany in 2006 and was easily shut out by the Americans last week.

Jermain Defoe | Tottenham
Caps: 41

Goals:
11

Castrol Ranking:
30

Pros:
The deadliest finisher of the England squad and the sort the Three Lions desperately need in front of goal right now. Can turn a half chance into a goal.

Cons:
Debate surrounds his ability to play alongside Rooney in a front two and had little impact from the bench against Algeria.
