England officials blocked star striker Wayne Rooney from discussing his religious views at a press conference yesterday, according to The Independent.
Speaking to the media in the build-up to the crunch Group C clash against Algeria, the 24-year old striker was questioned about the cross he has been wearing in training. The superstar had been pictured regularly wearing the jewellery during preparations for the Three Lions matches.
Rooney, when asked about the ornament, stated: "It's my religion." Any further religious questions were shot down by Football Association head of media relations Mark Whittle, however, who interjected they were off the agenda.
Earlier on in the session, Rooney also said:"I've been wearing them [cross] for years now and you don't usually watch training [to see them.]
"I obviously can't wear them in games."
