World Cup 2010: Manchester United winger Nani explains controversial comments over injury recovery
Portuguese wants to put an end to all doubts...
By Luis Mira
After landing at Lisbon airport yesterday, Nani surprisingly declared that it would take him just one week to recover from the shoulder injury which had ruled him out of the entire World Cup for Portugal.
There has been speculation in some quarters that Nani's removal from the Seleccao was caused by a positive anti-doping test or a spat with coach Carlos Queiroz, rather than a shoulder injury.
Nani has now issued a statement to end "totally unfounded rumours, doubts and suspicion" about his injury, stating that his previous remarks were caused by his "tremendous desire to play and help the team".
"I did not explain myself well when I said I would be fit in a week after asking me how long my recovery would take, and so I lament the embarassment that unconsciously I ended up creating," he told Gestifute Media.
"With the cluster of journalists and the fatigue from the trip I had just made, I always gave very short answers, and in that particular one I really should have explained myself better: I think that in a week I will be fine to do my everyday life, not to compete.
"When a player is feeling just a little bit better, regardless of which injury it is, he always thinks he is fit, even if he is not, because there is a lot of anxiety to recover fast and play again.
"That is my case. The injury is there, in my clavicle, that is why I had to leave the national team, but since I am feeling better, in my head I think that there is nothing wrong anymore."
The Seleccao will kick off their World Cup campaign this afternoon, against Cote d' Ivoire, at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.
