Belarus 2-2 Honduras: Georgie Welcome on target as Los Catrachos claim World Cup 2010 warm-up draw
Welcome header cancels out Anton Putsilo brace...
By Rupert Fryer
Honduras played out a 2-2 draw with Belarus on Thursday evening as Reinaldo Rueda's side continued their preparations for this summer's World Cup in South Africa.
Julio Cesar de Leon had given Honduras a 26th minute lead before Anton Putsilo grabbed a brace inside three second half minutes to put the home side ahead. Honduras coach Rueda was visibly miffed with his side’s defending for Putsilo’s second.
Having already conceded to a Putsilo goal just a few minutes earlier, after losing the ball up-field, Honduras were caught completely flat-footed by a quick Belarusian breakaway.
Sergey Kornilenko latched onto a long ball down the right and centred to a completely unmarked Putsilo, who had time to take a touch and steady himself before slotting the ball past Vallardes from six yards.
If Honduras hope to keep David Villa et al quiet at this summer’s showpiece in South Africa, they will have to quickly learn to be more disciplined at the back, especially when made to turn on the counter.
Honduras deservedly drew level 10 minutes later when substitute Welcome played a cross field ball to Edgar Alvarez before darting into the box to leap onto the return and head unchallenged past Yuri Zhevnov.
The Belarus goalkeeper had come out to claim the ball but found himself horribly caught beneath the ball’s flight, providing Welcome the invitation of an empty net.
While Rueda would have noted his team will have improve their defensive positioning at set pieces, and work on their shape when losing possession, the Colombian would have seen enough enterprise from his front men to believe they are capable of grabbing a goal or two this summer.
Honduras have been drawn in World Cup Group H along with Chile, Switzerland and Spain.

"But, we came through. Obviously there were a lot of changes so it's good to get the result.
"Belgium are a very, very strong side who are going to be really good in the future. Vincent [Kompany] told me about them and said that they were coming good and I totally agree with him."
"[Gary] Cahill I suppose is slightly more of a concern for me because it is a jaw injury. We're desperately hoping the CT scan doesn't show any fracture and it's just going to be a bruising situation, which will be bad enough, but won't stop him taking part in the tournament. As far as John's [Terry] concerned he felt his hamstring a little bit. Again it wasn't a major thing when he came off but we still need to scan it just to be 100 per cent sure."
Suffice to say, if Cahill has broken his jaw, he won't play any part in the tournament.
