Newcastle's Shola Ameobi to play in Nigeria friendly against Venezuela

The Magpies forward, who represented England at Under-21 level, is set to make his Super Eagles debut one year after securing Fifa’s nod to play for the country of his birth

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has handed Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi a call-up ahead of next week's friendly clash with Venezuela in Miami.

Ameobi was born in Nigeria but, having represented England at youth level, had to seek approval from Fifa before switching allegiances.

However, that process has run smoothly and the Magpies forward is expected to take part in the Super Eagles' clash with the South Americans on November 14.

Keshi told “Ameobi is excited about playing for the Eagles and he has told me that he might be with us in America.”

Among the other 11 Europe-based players called up for the encounter is Levante’s Obafemi Martins, who has shown great form since leaving Russia for Spain.
