Fifa president says continent must show that it deserves more places by performing better at future tournaments, with only Ghana advancing past the group stages in South Africa

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has warned Africa that they could have their slots at the World Cup reduced if teams from the continent do not perform better in future tournaments.

Africa had six representatives in South Africa in last year’s tournament, but will see that figure fall to five in Brazil in 2014, with countries from the continent calling for an increase in their quota.

However, Blatter has insisted that the continent needs to prove its worth by getting results on the pitch, with only Ghana progressing past the group stages in South Africa.

"All of the Fifa member countries have equal voting rights, but when it comes to the World Cup, which is the only income of Fifa, our executive committee agrees that those confederations that have the best football should have more representatives," Blatter was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"There are no more small national teams, everyone can beat everyone, but it's up to Africa to prove that they deserve more [World Cup places].

"For the future it depends on the results of African teams in the World Cup."
