The Manchester United boss is fuming after hearing Stuart Pearce has named 10 of his players, including Wayne Rooney, in his provisional squad for the Olympics football tournament

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been left fuming following the news that Wayne Rooney is on Stuart Pearce’s shortlist for the Great Britain Olympic football squad.

Pearce had previously promised that no player would be selected for both the Euro 2012 Championships and the Olympics. However, Sir Alex is staggered by the number of United players on the 80-man provisional shortlist, with 10 of his squad - including Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck and Phil Jones - included.

GOLDEN GB
5/1 Great Britain are 5/1 with William Hill to win the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics.

The Scot believes that his players’ Premier League preparations will be adversely affected if they compete in the Olympic tournament, as the new league campaign kicks-off just seven days after the final.

He told The Mail on Sunday: “It’s ridiculous, utter chaos. I have no idea how badly other clubs are affected but I would imagine Tottenham will have a few, like Gareth Bale. Aston Villa have a lot of younger players as well - that is all Alex McLeish needs.

“We have agreed that any player who boards the plane to the European Championship in Poland and Ukraine will not be considered for selection to Team GB.

“It's a sensible football decision when you consider the demands on players, and it now leaves no room for doubt for players and their clubs about next summer and the two major tournaments.”

The Red Devils have not released details about their summer tour yet, but are looking to travel to countries as far afield as China, Korea and South Africa. The absence of the likes of Rooney on the tour would disappoint the club’s sponsors.

Sir Alex added: “We've got 10 players nominated [for the GB Olympics team] as well as David De Gea [for Spain] and Javier Hernandez [Mexico]. It's serious. This is the start of the season we're talking about.

“We'll be left with only one senior goalkeeper because Ben Amos has been nominated by Team GB and De Gea will be at the Olympics with Spain.

“The FA might also want five of our players for a European Under-19 tournament. We were intending to take them on pre-season tour. It's absolute chaos.

“I have no jurisdiction - it is up to the players themselves. But if the players don't want to go, there is nothing they [Team GB] can do.”
