The 18-year-old has revealed scans showed his knee problem isn't as bad as originally feared after sustaining injury during defeat to Manchester United

Sunderland striker Connor Wickham has revealed scans on his injured knee show the problem is not as severe as initally feared.

The 18-year-old fell awkwardly during Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Manchester United and underwent tests on Monday to assess the damage.

Sunderland's medical staff originally thought the teenager could face a lengthy period on the sidelines after being stretchered off at Old Trafford but Wickham believes the early signs look positive.

Wickham posted on Twitter: “Scans showing injury not as bad as first thought, waiting to see a knee specialist later in the week.”
