When it comes to individual awards, it is attacking players who often hog the limelight. This can be perfectly illustrated by the list of past Ballon d'Or winners - only three defenders and one goalkeeper have picked up the prize.

But defenders and goalkeepers are just as important as the more heralded midfielders and attackers, as Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart proved this week.

The England No.1 put on a shot-stopping clinic against Dortmund at Eastlands, producing a string of miraculous, world-class saves from the likes of Mario Gotze. That City managed to grab a completely undeserved point with a late Mario Balotelli penalty - thus keeping their qualification hopes alive - was purely down to Hart.

The 25-year-old followed up this perfect five-star masterclass with another commanding showing in the 3-0 Premier League win over Sunderland on Saturday.

Congratulations to Joe Hart, Goal.com's 177th World Player of the Week winner!

Honourable Mention

Cristian Baroni - Fenerbahce

Fener had been on the rocks of late amid internal turmoil and were fearing the worst when they faced Besiktas in an Istanbul derby, but a magnificent playmaking performance from Cristian helped Aykut Kocaman's side to a 3-0 win at Sukru Saracoglu.

Kyi Lin - Myanmar

The 22-year-old shone for his side in matches against Brunei and Timor Leste, scoring the only goal of the match against the former opponent, before netting a brilliant header and a magnificent strike as Myanmar ran out 2-1 winners against the latter.

Lionel Messi - Barcelona

The attacker was in fine form for the Blaugrana in midweek, setting up both goals for Tito Vilanova's men against Benfica, and went on to engage in a fascinating personal battle with Cristiano Ronaldo on Sunday, scoring twice as his side were forced to settle for a share of the spoils against Real Madrid.

Cristiano Ronaldo - Real Madrid

The Portuguese scored his second hat-trick in the space of a few days when the Spanish champions faced Ajax in the Champions League in midweek, and played through the pain barrier to net a brilliant double in a pulsating Clasico at Camp Nou on Sunday.

Walter Samuel - Inter

The Argentine played a key role as the Nerazzurri climbed to third in the Serie A table with a derby win over AC Milan at San Siro, scoring the only goal and shackling the Rossoneri attack superbly as Andrea Stramaccioni's men survived a barrage of chances from the hosts.

Each week our worldwide team of editors will put forward a selected candidate, as chosen by Goal.com International, who deserves recognition for achieving something special that matchday.

You can also help us choose a worthy recipient of the weekly accolade by leaving your nominations and comments here. Your suggestions will be taken into consideration.

It won't necessarily be the best player in the world - at least not usually - but whoever we crown will have accomplished something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention...
