Poll: Is Nigel de Jong the solution to Manchester United's midfield problems?

Louis van Gaal is eyeing the AC Milan man in a £8 million deal, but are his qualities what the new manager needs or are their better alternatives in the transfer market?

Manchester United have made their first move to sign Nigel De Jong, launching an £8 million bid as Louis van Gaal looks to add to the early summer signings of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw.

The new manager is very familar with the AC Milan, and former Manchester City, defensive midfielder due to his past commitments with the Netherlands international setup.

The 29-year-old is one of a long list of midfield targets for United as they look to rebuild following a disasterous campaign under David Moyes, having also targeted Arturo Vidal and Kevin Strootman.

The Chile star and his club Juventus have both insisted a move to Old Trafford is not in the pipeline, while Van Gaal is prepared to wait for his No.1 target Strootman as the midfielder recovers from a knee injury.

Meanwhile, with United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Real Madrid's Angel Di Maria as Paris Saint-Germain have admitted defeat due to cost in their attempts to sign the Argentine.

Is De Jong the perfect fit for Van Gaal's 3-5-2 formation, or are there better alternatives elsewhere? Should Van Gaal put more focus on other, more important, targets or is the squad strong enough already?
