David Moyes and Jose Mourinho lead their new sides into a potential title clash on Monday evening, with Wayne Rooney's future at Old Trafford looming large in the background
David Moyes and Jose Mourinho both face their first major test in charge of their new clubs on Monday evening, as Manchester United take on Chelsea at Old Trafford.
Moyes has already bagged his first trophy as United boss in the Community Shield, while Robin van Persie is showing ominous signs of continuing the blistering scoring form of last season.
The Scot, however, failed to beat Mourinho in eight attempts in the Premier League with Everton, losing five times and earning three draws.
Beating the Special One will be just as difficult this time around. Chelsea sit top of the league with maximum points from their first two matches and boast a wealth of creative riches.
And then there is the issue of Wayne Rooney, who has made no secret of his desire to swap Old Trafford for Stamford Bridge this summer, despite United's reluctance to sell to a main rival.
Rooney's future will dominate the agenda whether he features or not, with Moyes insisting he is willing to throw the unsettled 28-year-old into the action against his primary suitors if necessary.
This early in the season defeat would not be catastrophic for either side, but it is clear that there are more than simply three points up for grabs.
Will Manchester United defeat Chelsea in David Moyes’ first encounter with his side’s title rivals? Or will Jose Mourinho emerge the stronger from the early season trip to face the champions?
