Poll of the Day: Can Van Persie emulate Cantona at Manchester United?

After scoring seven goals in eight games, the Dutch striker looks set to become an Old Trafford legend, can he follow in the footsteps of one of their all-time greats?

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie stamped his name in Arsenal history last season, before making the controversial switch from the Emirates Stadium to Old Trafford.

After such an impressive start to his career with Sir Alex Ferguson's side, many Manchester United fans will be asking themselves just how far Van Persie can go as a Red Devil.

With seven goals in eight games, the Dutchman has spoken of his happiness at securing a move to Manchester, already stating that he hopes to improve further in the future under Sir Alex.

Comparisons with United legend Eric Cantona have unsurprisingly been made, with the Dutchman's arrival striking similarities with that of the former France international.

In August, Sir Alex said: "Robin is what we have needed for the last couple of years,

"We needed a finished player. We have had several players who have been this sort of catalyst, starting with Eric Cantona.

"We never thought we could get Van Persie. Even if you go back six months I couldn't see us getting him."

In what could be a particularly shrewd move in deciding where the title ends up at the end of the season, Sir Alex's summer acquisition could prove to be a decisive factor in those proceedings.

With Van Persie hitting form so early on in his Manchester United career, can he go on to emulate the legendary Cantona? Or, at 29, are the striker's best years behind him, suggesting that any comparison between him and the United great are somewhat premature?
