ASTON VILLA

Brad Friedel - 7 - Helpless to stop Collins' own goal but was usual obstinate self in front of everything else. Did well to flick Carrick's stinging half-volley over the bar and saved superbly from Rooney.

Carlos Cuellar - 7 - Looped a fantastic header over the despairing reach of Van der Sar into the top corner. Constant threat on dead balls and carried out his day-to-day task of defending reasonably well.

James Collins - 5 - Unlucky to deflect Giggs' thumped square ball into his own net, but leaden-footed to stop Rooney throughout.

Richard Dunne - 7 - Mopped up the pieces at the back with typical authority. Careful not to allow himself to be isolated by Rooney. Charge up the pitch in second half brought to an abrupt end by Brown.

Luke Young - 5 - Breathed a sigh of relief after Nani's red card as he had been troubled by him only for Valencia to keep up the pressure. Picked out one decent cross to Agbonlahor.

Stilian Petrov - 5 - On the receiving end of Nani's dreadful attempt at a tackle. Troubled by knock all night and walked off the pitch in discomfort in the second half.

Ashley Young - 6 - Stalemate with Evra saw the pair neutralise each other's attacking threat. Bag of tricks found wanting to ghost past the French international.

James Milner - 5 - Outplayed by England colleague Carrick and struggled to find room to manoeuvre. Had one decent effort which was saved by Van der Sar.

Fabian Delph - 4 - Invisible man. Game passed the youngster by completely before O'Neill hooked him for Carew.

Stewart Downing - 6 - Didn't extract himself from Rafael's attentions in normal play. On hand from a corner on the opposite wing to centre to Cuellar for the opener.

Gabriel Agbonlahor - 5 - Usual giant-killing antics were left off the pitch. Posed no threat to United's centre-backs and was left without support from midfield.

Substitutes

Steve Sidwell - 5 - Collision with Giggs forced the Welshman off the pitch.

John Carew - 5 - Took a tumble in the box under light pressure from Evans.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Edwin Van der Sar - 6 - Had no hope of reaching Cuellar's lofted header and only other involvement was to pick Villa's crosses from the air.

Rafael da Silva - 8 - Shut out Downing on his flank and bombed forward to good effect to fill the gap left by Nani.

Wes Brown - 6 - Typical rough and ready display from United's resident tough nut. Refused to give Agbonlahor a yard whether through fair or foul means.

Jonny Evans - 7 - Won a number of important headers and pulled out a series of smart interceptions. Booked for a tug of Petrov's shirt.

Patrice Evra - 6 - Wind was taken out of sail's by Nani's red card. Had to stay back to hold the fort.

Paul Scholes - 5 - Seemed fazed by Villa's gusto and struggled to get involved. Problem was exacerbated upon Nani's dismissal. Sacrificed for Valencia to add pace.

Michael Carrick - 7.5 - Best part of United's trident in the middle of the park. Never panicked in possession even when United went down to 10 men. Hammered a shot at Friedel in the first half.

Darren Fletcher - 6 - Alternated with Carrick at the base of United's diamond. Put in a decent shift.

Nani - 4 - Rush of blood to the head saw him rightly dismissed for a two-footed lunge on Petrov. Undid excellent work beforehand as his perfectly weighted cross found Giggs to force home a levelling goal.

Wayne Rooney - 7 - Thankless task made harder by Nani's exit. Used class to work way in to good positions.

Ryan Giggs - 7 - Heavy surface seemed to sap the spring from his legs, but distribution still creative. Drifted cleverly in to space to force the own goal and picked out team-mates with some excellent passes. Knee to the arm from Sidwell brought worrying end to evening.

Substitutes

Dimitar Berbatov - 5 - Made no impression in the 20 minutes he was on the park.

Luis Antonio Valencia - 7 - Lively introduction saw him trouble Luke Young and fail to make the most of a promising opening from Giggs' low cut-back.
