World Cup 2010 Know Your Rivals: Group C - Legendary England commentator John Motson looks ahead to South Africa
Ask 'Motty'...
In this special series we bring you the local knowledge of the world's leading football tournament. With our worldwide team of experts, each one based in the country in question - from Brazil to North Korea - you'll hear first-hand the latest team news, exclusive interviews, and fan opinions of your World Cup opponents.
For millions in Britain, John Motson or 'Motty' is the voice of football. In a career spanning over forty years and 2,000 matches, including commentating on fifty major finals, he has had an unparalleled insight into the ups and downs of the national game. From reporting on the exploits of the giant-killing Hereford team in the 1972 FA Cup that made his name on Match of the Day to the estimated twenty-million viewers who tuned in to his commentary on England's match with Portugal at the 2006 World Cup, Motson's time in the commentary box has delivered some unforgettable anecdotes.
John, you have been to many World Cups - how much are you looking forward to Africa's first World Cup?
"Very much. It will be a fascinating experience for all broadcasters to see a World Cup on a new continent."
Have you been to South Africa before? What are your thoughts on the country?
"Yes on holiday – I loved Cape Town and went down to Port Elizabeth along the Garden Route. It is very beautiful and different to anywhere else I have been."
How far do you think Fabio Capello's England team can go?
"With a bit of luck, if they steer clear of injuries, I think they could reach the final."
Which players do you believe will be vital to England's chances at the World Cup?
"Wayne Rooney first and foremost. But John Terry is key as captain and both Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard will hope for a better outcome than in 2006."
Does England have any weaknesses?
"They need to be sure about their number one goalkeeper and to defend with maximum concentration. Also they must not have a complex about penalty shoot outs!"
What other teams are, in your view, the favourites?
"Obviously Brazil and Spain - but I never underestimate Germany!"
Any dark horses, in your view, that could surprise us all and get to the semi finals or finals?
"Maybe it’s time for an African Nation to go further than the quarter-finals - the Ivory Coast perhaps?"
Lastly, it will be winter in South Africa - will the famous John Motson sheepskin coat be in your suitcase?
"No, it’s too heavy! But I will take a raincoat."
