Manchester City striker John Guidetti has returned to full first-team training following an injury hell that sidelined him for eight months.

The 20-year-old Sweden international, who signed a three-year contract renewal with the club in October, missed Euro 2012 after failing to recover from an infected nerve in his thigh but now looks set to add competition to Roberto Mancini's misfiring frontline.

Guidetti enjoyed a highly successful season-long loan at Feyenoord last year where he netted 20 times in 23 appearances for the De Kuip side before contracting the mystery illness that ruled him out of the European Championships.

And although he was expected to be offered on loan to Bolton in January following his recovery, Guidetti will have the chance to stake a claim for a first-team place before the conclusion of the January transfer window.

City's strikers have been notably off-colour so far this season, with Mario Balotelli, who has been linked with a January return to Italy, in particular struggling to reach the heights of last campaign, scoring just one league goal in 11 games.

Guidetti is highly regarded at City, as well as on the international scene, where his compatriot Zlatan Ibrahimovic has spoken generously of the prospect in the past - describing him as Sweden's joker in the pack, before it was clear that he would miss the tournament.

Despite his promising development in the Eredivisie last year, City opted to keep Guidetti in Manchester this summer after rejecting a second loan approach from Feyenoord as the Swede targets regular first-team football.
