Sunderland are believed to have placed a £2.7 million bid to bring in Marcos Angeleri from Estudiantes.
It has been reported that the Wearside club scouted out the right-back recently, and swooped in quickly to tie up a deal that could see the 27-year-old make a move to the Premier League.
The Black Cats' representatives have agreed to a three-year deal for the defender, according to The Mirror.
Angeleri is believed to be a second choice transfer target for manager Steve Bruce, as Tottenham Hotspur reportedly held out for close to £9m for Alan Hutton - who had spent the latter half of the 2009-10 season on loan at Sunderland.
