Barcelona defender Carles Puyol has told Spanish paper Marca that Cesc Fabregas is starting to show the strain of continued speculation over his future.

“It's very unusual to see Cesc nervous, but all this is a bit problematic for him because we are talking daily about this topic; his fans, his manager and his teammates must all be respected,” Puyol said.

Barcelona confirmed on Tuesday morning that they have approached Arsenal about their midfielder, but have yet to make a formal bid. With the 23-year-old under contract until 2014 and the Gunners keen to keep their captain, Fabregas could be set to stay in the spotlight throughout the summer.

However, Puyol is hopeful that Fabregas will join him in Spain and he believes that the Arsenal star will be the perfect addition to Pep Guardiola’s La Liga champions.

“Cesc is a great player, a great friend and I think he’s perfect for Barcelona," he said.

"For me if I'd like to see him at Barça, but the fact he is under contract [at Arsenal] must be respected.”
