Everton starlet Jack Rodwell is at the centre of a Manchester United and Chelsea bidding war - report

Europa League: Jack Rodwell, Everton v SK Sigma (PA)
Manchester United and Chelsea are ready to go toe-to-toe for Everton's emerging talent Jack Rodwell this summer, according to The Times.

The newly crowned Premier League champions are prepared to enter into a bidding war with United to secure the 19-year-old's services, as manager Sir Alex Ferguson attempts to replace veterans Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs with promising British talent.

The Red Devils have already captured highly rated England under-21 defender Chris Smalling, in a £10 million move from Fulham, and his international team-mate Rodwell could be next in line for a move to Old Trafford.

Rodwell, who scored against United earlier in the season, was the subject of a £14 million bid from Chelsea last year according to reports, and both sides look set to reignite their attempts for his services this summer.

A product of the Everton youth set up, the Merseyside club will be keen to hold onto their midfield fulcrum, although they failed in their attempt to keep Wayne Rooney at Goodison Park when United came calling in 2004.

Aston Villa star James Milner is also thought to be a target for United, but persuading the west Midlands club to sell one of their prized assets may prove a large stumbling block.
