Joe Cole will not be going to the World Cup, as England manager Fabio Capello is reportedly set to leave the Chelsea midfielder out of his 30-man provisional squad.

The Italian will not take Gary Neville, Wes Brown, Joleon Lescott, Scott Parker or the injured Gareth Barry to South Africa and Bobby Zamora will fight with Darren Bent for a striker spot.

After meeting with assistant Franco Baldini on Monday it appears that Capello will choose Ledley King, Jamie Carragher, Theo Walcott and Adam Johnson.

It appears that Cole, who starred for England at the 2006 World Cup, is the biggest omission from Capello’s squad after failing to impress at Chelsea following a nine-month injury lay-off, according to The Mirror.

Johnson has impressed at Manchester City this season and with Cole’s absence he will get an opportunity to press his claims further to Capello during England’s pre-World Cup friendlies against Mexico and Japan.
