Fernando Torres tops £100 million summer shopping list for Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich - report
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will provide Carlo Ancelotti with £100 million to help re-build the squad, with Liverpool’s Fernando Torres considered to be the top target.
The Blues owner met with the Italian after Tuesday night’s 1-0 Champions League defeat against Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan at Stamford Bridge, a loss which saw them eliminated from Europe's premier competition.
Abramovich has assured that Ancelotti will remain at the Chelsea helm, but following an early exit from the Champions League, the Russian will be looking to boost the squad by splurging on top players in the transfer market this summer.
"Carlo has the full backing of Roman and that will mean the kind of money being spent this summer that we haven't seen since Mourinho was in charge,” a senior Chelsea source told The Sun.
"Roman believes Carlo is the right man and will give him exactly what he needs to rebuild the team.
"This squad has gone a bit stale and needs to have some fresh blood."
Some of the potential targets for Chelsea include Torres, Atletico Madrid's Sergio Aguero, Inter's Maicon and Franck Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteigerof Bayern Munich.
The Blues will rid themselves of some of their current players to make room for the new superstars, with Joe Cole, Nicolas Anelka, Hilario, Paulo Ferreira and Juliano Belletti all expected to move elsewhere this summer.
Despite long-term injury spells for starters Michael Essien, Ashley Cole and Jose Bosingwa, Chelsea are still in a tight race with Arsenal and Manchester United for the Premier League title and have advanced to play Aston Villa in the FA Cup semi-finals.
