Manchester City prepare €50m bid for Real Madrid duo Gonzalo Higuain & Fernando Gago - report

Reports in the Spanish press suggest that Manchester City are planning a summer raid on Real Madrid, with Argentine pair Gonzalo Higuain and Fernando Gago in their sights.

Marca claim that the cash-laden English side will offer €50m for the duo, who cost los Blancos a combined €33.5m in 2006.

It is not the first time that Manchester City have looked to Gago to strengthen their midfield, as they were negotiating with los Merengues for the former Boca Juniors man during the winter transfer window.

Real Madrid's insistence on a €25m fee held up the deal, however, and there was not enough time remaining in the window to conclude the transaction by the time the clubs agreed on an €18m sum.

Roberto Mancini suggested that they had not given up the chase though, telling The Guardian: "Gago is a good player for Real Madrid, a fantastic player and we may move for him again in the summer."

Higuain poses a different problem for Blancos president Florentino Perez. 'Pipita' is currently one of the lowest earners at the Santiago Bernabeu as he makes around €1.6m per season, while recent contract negotiations have stalled.

The striker promised to earn his new deal on the pitch, but he was heavily criticised for his performance in the Spanish side's fateful 1-1 draw against Olympique Lyonnais in the Champions League which eliminated Madrid from the competition.

The fact that he was not brought in under the Perez regime and the club's rumoured desire to bring in Wayne Rooney could mean that the door is open for a transfer despite the striker enjoying a fine season in front of goal.
