A quartet of Premier League clubs are on stand-by as Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy concedes that Wolves will fail to hang on to striker Kevin Doyle should the club suffer relegation this season.

According to the Mirror, Aston Villa, Everton, Fulham and Sunderland are all eager to lodge a bid for the £6.5 million-rated Irishman when the transfer window reopens in the summer.

"If we go down, we have no chance of holding on to him," said McCarthy.

"If we stay up, we might still have a problem because there will be a few interested."

McCarthy reckons Doyle is among the best players in the Premier League and should set his sights on a move to one of the leading lights in the division if his time at Wolves comes to an end.

McCarthy added: "We have seen all the teams now and I've not noticed many better players than him.

"I'm not doing a selling job saying that because I'm not telling other managers anything they don't know.

"He would not be out of place in the company of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea."
