Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand may withdraw appeal against ban - report

Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand is considering whether to withdraw his appeal against a four-game ban for violent conduct as a goodwill gesture to the FA, according to a report from The Daily Telegraph.

There is still apparently a sense of injustice at Old Trafford about the England defender's suspension relating to a clash with Hull City's Craig Fagan.

However, in a week when Ferdinand was appointed the new England captain, it is believed the player feels that withdrawing the appeal might send out a more positive public signal.

The ultimate decision rests with United, though, and Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson would need to sanction any withdrawal of the appeal. The United hierarchy are believed to be happy to leave the decision with the club manager.

Ferdinand originally received a three-match ban for the incident. That suspension was increased by one game because the FA felt that the player's appeal was 'frivolous'.

Ferguson is apparently concerned by what he feels is the inconsistency of the FA's handling of such matters.
