AC Milan are confident they can lure Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic to Italy next summer as his price tag reportedly drops below the €20 million (£17.5m) barrier.

Il Corriere Dello Sport claims the Premier League champions have lowered their asking price from €27m (£23.6m) to anything between €17m (£14.8m) and €19m (£16.6m).

The 29-year-old centre-back is expected by many to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, with Milan currently in pole position to secure his signature.

Financial troubles and the arrival of Chris Smalling from Fulham for the next campaign have forced the Red Devils to put Vidic on the market for a discounted price, raising further eye-brows in Italy.

Milan are reportedly willing to use part of a €60m (£52.4m) sponsorship deal from Fly Emirates as money to sign the Serbian international.

However, the report conflicts with what the player's agent Silvano Martina said on Friday.

"All this talk is useless," he said when asked about the constant transfer speculation surrounding the centre-back.
