England could lose top seeding in World Cup draw - report

Both The Daily Mail and The Mirror claim that England are in danger of missing out on a top seeding for the 2010 World Cup.

The draw to determine the groups for next summer's showpiece event will take place on Friday, prior to which the organising committee will meet to settle on a seeding criteria.

It was widely expected that FIFA would take into account the teams' performance in the last two tournaments, as well as the current world rankings.

That system would put England among the seven teams to join hosts South Africa in Pot 1, but it is now rumoured that the committee could opt to consider only world rankings over the past three years - and that would not bode well for Fabio Capello and his men.

The Three Lions' qualifying loss to Ukraine - their only dropped points of the entire campaign - means they would slip below the Netherlands and thus be placed in Pot 2.

A FIFA source is quoted as saying: “There’s no front-runner in terms of how the seedings will be decided and there will be arguments.

“Seedings in 2002 and 2006 were determined by a mixture of previous results and rankings.

“But there’s a view we need to make the rankings mean more, as every match, including friendlies, contribute to them.

“Nobody knows what will happen or what criteria will be used.”
