Sunderland's Steve Bruce leads hunt for Middlesbrough's Adam Johnson - report

Sunderland are believed to be leading the race to capture the signature of Middlesbrough’s highly rated midfielder Adam Johnson.

The former England Under-21 international has firmly established himself in Middlesbrough’s first team since the departure of Stewart Downing to Aston Villa, and it is thought Johnson is likely to follow his former team mate into the Premier League during the January transfer window.

Steve Bruce is believed to be an admirer of the winger’s talents and with Sunderland’s promising start to season coupled with Johnson being born in the city, skysports.com claims the Black Cats are favourites to capture his signature.

Despite Johnson’s refusal to sign a new contract at The Riverside, Middlesbrough are still reluctant to sell. However, with him being available on a free at the end of the season, the potential financial rewards of a transfer may force the hand of the Championship side.

Everton, Manchester United and Liverpool are all supposedly monitoring Johnson’s situation, along with Premier League leaders Chelsea.
