Portsmouth target Aston Villa defender Nicky Shorey - report

UEFA CUP: Tomas Necid - Nicky Shorey, Slavia Prague - Aston Villa (PA)

Portsmouth are set to make another bid for Aston Villa full-back Nicky Shorey, who has fallen down the pecking order at Villa Park.

According to the Daily Star, manager Martin O'Neill is looking to sell Shorey during the winter window, and will capitalise on the interest that Pompey are alleged to have shown in the player.

The south coast club were looking to take the defender on loan during the latter stages of the summer window.

Shorey started the season as Villa's primary left-back, but has since been displaced by the consistent Stephen Warnock, who was signed from Blackburn in August.

Portsmouth are also believed to be looking into the possibility of recruiting a striker.

Amr Zaki, who spent last season on loan at Wigan Athletic, has been linked with a move to the Fratton Park side, as has Manchester City's Benjani.
