Foreign stars join Becks, Shearer, Seaman, Hoddle and co.
England2018's campaign to host the World Cup finals continues to impress as they announced an ambassador's squad that includes some of English football's biggest names – both homegrown and imported talent.
Some of the greatest players to grace the Premier League have lent their support to England's 2018 bid, including West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola, Nigerian forward Nwankwo Kanu, England goalkeeping legend Peter Shilton, LA Galaxy megastar David Beckham, as well as the first British-Asian footballer to compete in all four levels of English football, Zesh Rehman.
Chelsea and England captain John Terry is set to spearhead the list of ambassadors, who also feature members of the England Women's team, as well as representatives from the national disability teams.
The campaign continues to draw widespread support, with Terry saying: "England would be a fantastic home for the World Cup."
He continued: "Passionate fans can still make a difference by texting "62018" to 'Back the Bid', or by visiting the official website."
Terry's club team-mate Michael Ballack, captain of Germany, also voiced his support: "The atmosphere and competitive nature of English football has been a great experience. England would be a fitting host for the World Cup."
Meanwhile, Alan Shearer, England's seventh-top international goalscorer with 30 goals, concentrated on how football is embraced at every level in the country: "We love the game here and it plays a part in every town, village, city and street."
Eniola Aluko, an international forward for the England women's side, beamed: "I am honoured to be a World Cup ambassador for England. Nothing can match the atmosphere we experienced when playing in Euro 2005 in England. The knowledge and passion for the game is unrivalled and it would be a boost for both girls and boys football if we were to host the 2018 World Cup."
The chairman for England's 2018 bid, Lord Triesman, also offered his thoughts, celebrating the wealth of ambassadors that England can now boast.
He said: "This is an incredibly strong group of ambassadors. It is a positive reflection on English football that so many leading past and present players from around the world have chosen to support England2018."
