Newell's Old Boys seal Argentine title

The Rosario based outfit have won the league for the first time in nine years after fighting against relegation just one year ago
Newell’s Old Boys have won their first Argentine Primera Division title in nine years following Lanus’ defeat against Estudiantes.

Only a season ago, the Rosario outfit were facing relegation but after the return of ex-player Gerardo Martino as coach, the club secured a second place finish in the first league stage.

They went on to dominate the second stage, securing 12 wins from 18 games, scoring 40 goals in the process, with Ignacio Scocco and Maxi Rodriguez leading their charge and securing the title with a game to spare.

The Rosario outfit were able to call on veterans such as Gabriel Heinze to secure their landmark title win, which could yet become a double.

Martino has secured his side’s passage to the second stage of the 2014 Copa Liberatadores, a tournament in which they are still heavily involved, with a semi-final against Atletico Miniero to come in July.
