The former Serbia international believes the Real Madrid attacker has done enough to pip the Barcelona forward and last year's winner of the Fifa Ballon d'Or to the award
The Argentina international took his tally for club and country to 86 goals in a calendar year on Sunday when he netted a double against Betis to break Gerd Muller's record, yet Mijatovic feels Ronaldo has been even more impressive.
"I would like it if Cristiano Ronaldo wins it," Mijatovic told reporters. "He has done better than Messi this year in my opinion."
The former Real Madrid attacker then went on to discuss the title race, and stressed that Barcelona have not won anything just yet.
He added: "It's a significant gap, but we should not forget that May is still far away. There's plenty of football to be played and Barcelona will start spilling points at some point."
The Nou Camp side currently hold a six-point lead over second-placed Atletico, with Real Madrid trailing their arch-rivals by 11 points.
