thumbnail Hello,

The Icelandic midfielder says he is pleased he chose a summer move to White Hart Lane over offers from Swansea and Liverpool and wants to help Spurs return to the Champions League

Gylfi Sigurdsson insists the ambition and recent success of Tottenham made his decision to move to White Hart Lane in the summer an easy one.

Speaking to talkSPORT, the Icelandic international spoke about how he chose to join Andre Villas-Boas' side over Liverpool because of the club's burning desire to win trophies.

He said: "The ambition of the club is very high and things going on inside the club are great.

"The club finished fourth last season and they are aiming higher this season. It’s a great club so it wasn’t a hard decision.”

Chelsea's miraculous Champions League triumph last season relegated Spurs to the Europa League despite Harry Redknapp's men securing a top-four finish in the Premier League.

But Sigurdsson believes the club won't take Europe's second-tier competition lightly as they are desperate to land a trophy this season.

“Every footballer wants to play in the Champions League, it’s the highest stage,” he added.

“Tottenham were very unlucky last year that they didn’t get in it when Chelsea won the trophy.

“We’re in the Europa League now and the ambition this season is to try and get a Champions League spot.

“The club wants to win trophies and the Euopra League is a great trophy. The manager has won it before with Porto and the squad want to do well in it, so we want to win it.”
