The ex-France international's highly anticipated maiden appearance for his new club failed to eventuate, with news of a knock only coming to light hours before kick-offShanghai Shenhua glamour signing Nicolas Anelka's debut for the club has been put on hold after he missed their opening day Chinese Super League 1-1 draw with Jiangsu Sainty due to injury.
The French striker, who joined Shenhua from Chelsea in December, had been expected to take his place against Jiangsu with anticipation building and approximately 30,000 tickets sold for the game, however he missed the match due to an ankle problem.
Anelka's absence came as a surprise to many, with news of the injury only circulating hours before kick-off on Weibo, China's equivalent of Twitter.
The match, which was attended by celebrities such as basketballer Yao Ming, saw Jiangsu go ahead on 11 minutes through Aleksandar Jevtic's lofted header.
However, fellow new Shenhua signing Joel Griffiths levelled on 57 minutes with a close-range header from a corner after Moises' flick-on.
