The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has surprisingly voted against removing relegation as the mandatory punishment for any Super Lig side found guilty of match-fixing.

The governing body held a general assembly meeting in Istanbul on Thursday to discuss either the amendment or abolition of Article 58, which deals with the demotion of clubs found to have influenced or attempted to influence the outcome of a game.

It had been thought that the directive would be scrapped but TFF delegates voted against the motion.

The outcome has come as a major surprise, given that the Turkish Union of Clubs vice-president Hasan Akincioglu claimed last week that the TFF had ceded to their request to remove the threat of relegation.

A total of eight clubs have been implicated during the enquiry into allegations of match-fixing during last year's Super Lig championship.

Fenerbahce are one of the accused but they have insisted that they were not in favour of amending Article 58 as they feel they are innocent of all charges of match-fixing and that, consequently, the proposed rule change was never an issue for them.
