Late Brazilian football legend Socrates was remembered with a minute's silence during Wednesday's Istanbul derby, as Fenerbache and Galatasaray fans joined forces to pay homage to the iconic midfielder.
The former Corinthians player, and one of the stars of the Brazil team during the 1982 World Cup, passed away on Sunday morning due to complications arising from an intestinal infection. Ahead of the fiercely-contested derby, the idea emerged to honour the star.
Journalist Attila Gokce suggested a minute's silence to figures in the Turkish FA, who accepted his proposal and gave permission for the tribute to go ahead. Socrates was a close friend and international team-mate of Zico, who had a spell as Fenerbahce coach from 2006 to 2008 - guiding the side to the Uefa Champions League quarter-finals in 2007-08.
Galatasaray ended the match as victors, goals from Johan Elmander, Emanuel Eboue and Socrates' Brazilian compatriot Felipe Melo leading them to a 3-1 victory.
