Stuart Holden backs Jozy Altidore over criticism of USA's defeat to France
The AZ Alkmaar striker called for his side to start gaining results, rather than just experience, against the stronger nations
By Chris Davie
Stuart Holden has backed fellow USA international Jozy Altidore after the striker criticised his national side following their defeat to France on Friday.
The AZ Alkmaar forward took to Twitter in order to vent his frustration following the loss to Laurent Blanc's side by posting: "Not satisfied with the "it was a good experience" line anymore, we need to be better. #simpleasthat".
Holden, who is currently sidelined for six months after sustaining knee cartilage damage in September, maintains Altidore's point was valid and has urged USA to start securing results against high-calibre opponents.
"Playing against France, one of the best teams in the world, it was always going to be a tough game, everybody knew that going into the game," Holden told Talksport.
"Yes, it is a great experience, but I agree 100 per cent with Jozy that the experience can't be enough these days, we need to start pulling results out and competing with the best teams.
"We've had a new coach come in, [Jurgen] Klinsmann has brought some new ideas and a new style of play.
"In some senses he's gone with a more attacking formation, but it hasn't produced goals yet. I think it's a learning process, he's trying new guys but U.S soccer is at a point now where we're expecting to compete and start to win some of these games.
"For the most part, France dominated. But at the same time, the U.S showed some good signs drink the game. France had a tough time breaking us down."
The Bolton midfielder is also buoyed by the early signs shown from new USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann and believes the MLS will start producing talent worthy of the national side on a more consistent basis.
"Everybody has been excited [by the appointment]. Now Jurgen is bringing new ideas and working with the guys in different ways," said Holden.
"Over time he'll have his stamp on the team and that'll have a positive effect.
"The American league has grown and its starting to produce more players. I myself came through the MLS and then made the jump to Europe. I found the experience at Houston Dynamo invaluable, getting games and moving myself on as a player."
