Anzhi Makhachkala have given defender Roberto Carlos the role of caretaker coach, after Gadzhi Gadzhiyev was sacked.
The 65-year-old led the side to 11th place in the Russian Premier League last year, but despite a summer of heavy spending which saw the likes of Samuel Eto'o, Yuri Zhirkov and Balazs Dzsudzsak arrive, they have dropped to seventh after just one win in their last six matches.
As a result, chairman Suleyman Kerimov has handed the reins to the veteran Brazilian with Andrey Gordeev assisting him, although the 38-year-old will also continue as a player.
"The leadership of Anzhi Makhachkala have decided to release Gadzhi Gadzhiyey from his position as coach," a statement on their official website reads. "The teams will be prepared by Andrey Gordeev and Roberto Carlos, who will take over as player-coach.
"The club would like to thank the coach for his work and hopes that the experience and knowledge of Gadzhiyev will continue to support the development of the club and football in Dagestan."
However, it is expected that Roberto Carlos' stewardship will only bridge a gap until a big-name coach can be brought in, with the likes of Guus Hiddink, Jose Mourinho and Fabio Capello being mentioned as targets.
The new management team will begin their tenure with the visit of Lokomotiv Moscow on Sunday.
